New WiFi Internet Hotspots Available to Borrow
Do you need internet access at home or on-the-go for a short-term situation?
APL has new WiFi hotspots that you can request ahead of time and borrow for 14 days. These portable units use cellular data to wirelessly connect computers, smartphones, and other devices to the internet.
The hotspots are free to borrow and use, and they’re 5G, which means they are faster and more reliable than the units we offered before. They have the capacity to connect more devices so you can download files, stream videos and music, play games, work from home, online shop, complete schoolwork, and do other activities that require internet access.
Here are some commonly-asked questions and answers about the APL WiFi hotspot program:
What do I need to borrow a hotspot?
- Be 18 or older.
- Be a resident of the City of Albany.
- Have an Albany Public Library card in good standing. Any fines on the card must be below $10.01.
- Show us additional ID when checking out the device. This ID can be a valid NYS driver’s license or ID card, government-issued ID card (military ID or passport), or a university or school ID card.
Can I request a hotspot?
Yes, you can request a hotspot to be held and picked up at any of APL’s seven branches. Once notified that the requested hotspot is available, you’ll have three (3) days to pick it up.
How long can I keep the hotspot?
14 days.
Can I renew the hotspot to keep it longer?
No.
How many hotspots can I borrow at a time?
One.
What happens if I don’t return the hotspot on time?
You will be charged $2.00 per day in overdue fines.
What comes with the hotspot?
The unit comes in a carry bag, which includes the hotspot, charging cable, and wall charger. The hotspot is ready to use right out of the bag.
What happens if I lose the hotspot or it gets damaged?
You will be charged replacement costs for the hotspot and its accessories.
Where do I return the hotspot?
Return it to any of APL’s seven branches. Please do not put the hotspot in a book drop and do not return it to a library outside of Albany.
