Hey Albany, are you ready to rock?! Then head downtown to the Albany Public Library’s Main Library this summer for some great local music at the Garage Bands in the Garage concert series.
The free after-hours, all ages rock shows take place on the third Friday of each month this summer from 6 to 8 p.m. in the garage at the Main Library’s back entrance on Elk Street. You can hear some great local bands, get a library card and check out books from the Bookmobile, and buy used CDs (just $1 each, or $1 for a grab bag of 5 mystery CDs without cases) retired from the library’s collection at the Garage Bands Garage Sale.
Grab a lawn chair, pack a picnic dinner, and enjoy some great music at the Main Library this summer at the Garage Bands in the Garage concerts:
We are Jeneric - We are Jeneric has been described as “Perfectly crafted bedroom pop” by the blog Pop Tarts Suck Toasted, and as “Perfect, intimate, folky bedroom music for musing on your future and singing along to under your breath,“ The Tape Is Not Sticky. At its core We are Jeneric consists of Jen and Eric who met in the elevator of their dormitory at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1998. After moving to Thailand in 2005, Jen and Eric got caught in many monsoons, listened to a lot of Buddhist chanting from the nuns who lived next door, and ate a great deal of chili peppers, thus refining their sound. They then returned to the Albany area in 2006, where they met a bunch of Hobos who traveled with trumpets and saws. Jeneric morphed into We are Jeneric and added into its live performances the talents of said Hobos, the clever multi-instrumentalists they had been scouring the world for. |

“The Garage Bands in the Garage concerts are a great way to connect with people who don’t normally consider Albany Public Library a part of the city’s lively arts scene,” said Sarah Clark, readers services librarian. “The library hosts a lot of musical performances, film showings, and art exhibits throughout the year. We also have an extensive collection of music CDs and music-related materials available to anyone with a library card. The library is a great venue for arts and entertainment in Albany.”
Garage Bands in the Garage began in 2007 and won the Upper Hudson Library System Program of the Year Award in 2008. Local radio station, Exit 97.7 WEXT is a media partner for the 2009 season.
