Howe Branch during renovations

THE RENOVATION PROJECT: The $5.2 million John A. Howe Branch Library renovation project began in Fall 2008 and as of February 2010, work on the 71-year-old building is nearing completion.

CURRENT AND COMPLETED WORK: This stately historic library is undergoing a massive change. The restoration work on the historic windows is complete. A new two-story addition, which provides handicapped access, has been built. Attached to the back of the library, the addition houses an elevator, stairs, restrooms, and ground-floor book drop. A much-needed high-efficiency heating/cooling system has been installed for the building. The new rooms and work spaces are being outfitted with lovely cabinetry and furnishings. Workers also installed new electrical lines and duct work to help “green” the building.

UPCOMING WORK: Finish work is nearing completion. Furniture, shelving, collection, computers, and other technology will soon be moved into the building. The finished library will house an expansive collection for customers of all ages, as well as double the amount of public computers and free Wi-Fi internet connections, all in a beautiful, historic, energy efficient, environmentally sensitive “green” building.

GRAND OPENING: The grand opening of the Howe Branch Library is scheduled for Saturday, March 27, 2010. The entire community is invited to help us celebrate the newly renovated library. The library will be open that day from 1 to 5 p.m. Join us for a ribbon cutting at 1:30 p.m., entertainment and music from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., refreshments from hospitality sponsor Price Chopper starting at 1:30 p.m., and craft activities for kids and giveaways all afternoon.
